Readers know it. If you read an amazing book or series, when it’s finished, you feel like the richness of life has drained away…full out grief. What. Is. Life.
And suddenly I’m grappling with the twelve stages of grief. What? It’s only five? Well, it sure as heck it feels like TWELVE. Book-lovers grief is no joke.
denial, anger, bargaining, depression, acceptance?
HA.
12 Stages of Book-Lovers Grief
1. Reading slower because you can feel that the pages are becoming less.
2. Finishing the book, and then staring at the book cover for long minutes, reliving or rereading the best moments of the book.
3. Feeling like you’ll never read again. Nothing will ever be as good.
4. No desire to move from where you finished reading the book. “Sorry, bus driver, I’m in mourning I can’t get off.”
5. Reaching for your favorite comfort food. Pass the cheese curls.
5a. Blubbering into your beer at the bar about the love of your life…this book.
5b. Eating a tub of Ben and Jerry’s while watching a senseless comedy.
6. Flooding your social media with book hangover references, searching for other people who understand the tragedy of a finished book and the connected book-lovers grief.
7. Immediately googling the author to see if they have a sequel or even just another book. Is there a movie?
8. Wondering what’s happening to a book character only to realize that you can’t know because you finished the book. NOoooooOOoOOOOooooooo.
9. Laying on the floor angry at the author for not writing a longer book and causing your grief.
10. Blackmailing Telling all your friends about this book because it blew your mind. You must read it or we aren’t friends.
11. Sticking your fingers in your ears when someone suggests reading a new book.
12. But choosing another book (and starting the process all over again).
