The questions I receive about the writing process for my Christmas novella have surprised me (and delighted me too), and I love them. It’s fun to ponder my process for writing while knowing that so many other writers have such different processes! It’s not a one-size-fits-all situation!
Some writers like to write fast. Some like to write slow. Some start at the beginning while some start at the end. Others prefer outlines (me!). Some writers love to just write and see where their imagination takes them. Some do a mix of both. And now I’m feeling a bit like Dr. Seuss!
Some writers don’t like to write with music, but others must have music (that’s me). I’ve discovered that I do my best writing to music that is somewhat smooth while also carrying an undercurrent of something magical. That’s probably why I love listening to the soundtracks of Alice in Wonderland, Maleficent, and How to Train Your Dragon! While I did listen to some Christmas music while writing Take a Right at the Mistletoe, the below YouTube playlists were my go-to choices for writing.
Alice in Wonderland 2010
I love the quirkiness and the mystery and the magic that flows from every strain in this soundtrack. I’ve listened to it way too many times. I probably make up at least a million of the views!
Maleficent: Mistress of Evil
I have yet to see this movie, but the soundtrack has me wrapped around its little finger. From chill-giving to inspiring, every song pushes me deeper into my own writing rather than distracting me from it.
How To Train Your Dragon
I’m not sure what it is about these three movie soundtracks that feel so good. If you’re a music analyst, I would love to know why these three soundtracks somehow speak inspiration over my writing.
If you’re in the midst of writing or any other activity, you should definitely check these out!
