You have everything to do, but no desire to do it. All the energy in the world except when it comes to actually tackling your to-do list after an already long work day. You’d much rather climb into bed or build a fort. This happened to me this week.
I didn’t want to wash the dishes.
I didn’t want to wade through online tasks.
I didn’t want to run to the grocery store.
I didn’t want to fold my clean laundry.
But I was still so restless? Yeah. I didn’t want to do anything, but I wanted to do something. Confusing, right? So I settled myself down, and I tried to figure out what was going on here.
First of all, I felt tired.
After that, I wanted to be creative.
“Hey, do you want to build a fort?” I asked my beloved resident Slovak.
That invitation to creativity and child-like imaginative building spurred something delightful. We raided our closets, our rooms, and our linens. We piled old curtains, patterned sheets, gossamer scarves, and fluffy blankets in the middle of our small living room. Tape, twine, twinkle lights, and a broom joined the threads. Creativity activated.
Our couch is a fold-out bed so we pulled it out, and we propped up a spare mattress along the back to make a truly cozy base for building our fort. Using the broom as support pole, my resident Slovak tied string through the pole while I made suggestions, and then we draped curtains across the strings. In the harsh daylight, you can see where masking tape holds our lovely little fort together, but in the softer tones of evening light, the space is pure magic.
The moral of the story is that we all need to create magical places in our apartments and lives.
Benefits When You Build a Fort (as an adult)
- engaging your inner child and imagination
- creating a fun place to do your paperwork or movie watching
- transforms a boring living space into a comfortable, hand-made cave
- gives you a sense of accomplishment
- makes you giggle any time you think about how there’s a fort in the middle of your living room
- offers the perfect haven after any type of day
Let’s be honest. It’s so important for us to take part in activities that will be a pump of happy syrup to our latte lives. And sometimes, that means going back to our child-loves, like building a fort or playing pretend or imagining the floor is lava.
Is there something you can do today to activate your creativity?
