About the Sons of Blackbird Mountain
Title: Sons of Blackbird Mountain
Author: Joanne Bischof
Genre: Historical Romance
After the tragic death of her husband, Aven Norgaard is beckoned to give up her life in Norway to become a housekeeper in the rugged hills of Nineteenth-Century Appalachia. Upon arrival, she finds herself in the home of her late husband’s cousins—three brothers who make a living by brewing hard cider on their three-hundred acre farm. Yet even as a stranger in a foreign land, Aven has hope to build a new life in this tight-knit family.
But her unassuming beauty disrupts the bond between the brothers. The youngest two both desire her hand, and Aven is caught in the middle, unsure where—and whether—to offer her affection. While Haakon is bold and passionate, it is Thor who casts the greatest spell upon her. Though Deaf, mute, and dependent on hard drink to cope with his silent pain, Thor possesses a sobering strength.
As autumn ushers in the apple harvest, the rift between Thor and Haakon deepens and Aven faces a choice that risks hearts. Will two brothers’ longing for her quiet spirit tear apart a family? Can she find a tender belonging in this remote, rugged, and unfamiliar world?
A haunting tale of struggle and redemption, Sons of Blackbird Mountain is a portrait of grace in a world where the broken may find new life through the healing mercy of love.

On a scale of cotton candy to Brussels sprouts, Sons of Blackbird Mountain by Joanne Bischof is a loaf of homemade bread. Yeasty and filling, this bread melts on the tongue. Whether eaten for breakfast, lunch, or dinner, this loaf satisfies your food cravings.
[Copy received. Opinions my own.]
Aven, widow of an alcoholic husband, arrives in Blackbird Mountain, hoping for a new life. Her husband’s Aunt Dorothe promised three boys that needed care and suggested that she come. Aven arrives to the Noorgard farm to realize that she didn’t get the whole story. And yet, she feels like she’s finally come home.
I think I’ll always think of this book with a deep sigh. Yes, the good kind of sigh. Joanne Bischof writes a cast of characters that feel human with flaws, quirks, and beauty. I’ve never read a book with one of the main characters being deaf, and though I don’t have first hand experience, I appreciated the window that Joanne Bischof gave me to this silent yet noisy world. I’m not sure what to say to encourage you to read this book, except I loved the tone of kindness that ran alongside the reality of hurtful decisions. That is life, choosing kindness in spite of evil.
If you love a sweet romance intertwined with family dynamics, then Sons of Blackbird Mountain is for you.

Joanne did give a wonderful window into the life of a deaf man in the 1800’s. Excellent way of phrasing that!

Right? I really enjoyed how she portrayed it. There’s no way for me to tell if it’s accurate, but I think it opened up a new consideration of the world to me. And I love that about reading!
