It’s far too easy to despair.
Sometimes it’s easier to give up than to hold tightly to the dreams of what could be. If we don’t try, we won’t be disappointed. Because that girl with blonde hair and long legs is better at everything than me and that geeky-glasses boy is smarter, too.
I don’t like sticking my neck out to try something that I know I could fail at.
In class when the teacher asked a question, I wouldn’t raise my hand unless I was absolutely certain of the answer being correct.
When a friend asked me to guess what something was, I struggled to come up with the three required guesses because I knew I’d be wrong. I’d rather never know what the thing is than guess wrong. For the record, I did finally make three wrong guesses.
I’d rather not try because I could fail.

I lack hope.
But sometimes you have to dig your nails in and choose to ignore that despairing feeling. You have to dust off your butterfly net and pursue those iridescent wings of hope. And when the net encircles the fragile winged creature, you must not crush it in your rush to hold tightly to its brilliant optimism in the midst of confusion and difficulty.
I need hope.
Hope is what pushes you from the bottom of the pool with lungs burning for oxygen and gives you the strength to kick, parting the water with your head and breathing that life-giving air. The moment of refreshment. Hope obtained.
It’s too easy to drag feet through the monotony of the daily pattern of sleeping, working, eating, and repeat. Things that used to spring your step have drained to a well-worn, joyless path.
But Hope!
The remembrance of a pretty little bloom bobbing along your path. The rambunctious hug from a quarrelsome child who thinks you make imagination games the best. A song that rejuvenates your worldview as you do your normal routine.
Hope is hard to hold on to, and it’s a choice.

To the Hope Giver,
Replace the despair in my heart with your joy and peace for the goodness to come. When my feet find every pothole in life’s worn path, remind me to look to you.
Nothing is right and good in this world. I wonder why I should even try to make things better and to care because I only end up hurt or disappointed. Why should I even try?
But you promise to be my hope in this world. You paint the world green after a frigid, stark winter. You offer second, third, fourth, fifty-fifth chances. You renew us day by day.
May you, the God of Hope, fill me with all joy and peace in believing, so that through the power of the Holy Spirit, I may abound in hope.
