I’m sure you’ve heard the phrase before, “Eat your peas. There are starving children in…”
I don’t think anyone likes that type of reasoning. I sure don’t.
And yet, there’s a nugget of truth in there. The things we throw away without much thought could be the difference between life and death for some people. But, how can you get these items to the people that need them?
Global Links is a Pittsburgh-based, internationally-minded organization focused on bringing medical relief to Latin America and the Caribbean (specifically: Bolivia, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Guyana, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica, and Nicaragua.
The USA has tight regulations on materials used in our hospitals and because of this there are often a lot of unused medical supplies. Global Links works to connect the surplus to the countries that actually need the materials. Here’s a quick video bringing their vision to life.
I’ve been to volunteer with Global Links a couple of times, and I visited this facility, getting to participate in the sorting of equipment, scrubbing of walkers, and packaging of supplies. I found the experience to be a pleasant one with other friendly volunteers. If you’re interested in volunteering or in supporting this organization in another way, check out this link.
You can donate money, supplies, sutures, scrubs, and baby products.
Global Links is for you if you’re a Pittsburgh native, but even if you’re not there are easy ways to help out in their mission. If you have a passion for healthcare and being a good steward of resources, this organization deserves your attention.
What About You?
