Have you ever watched a movie or tv show where a secondary character just kind of steals the show for you? Well, I have to say that the cast of Take a Right at the Mistletoe was no exception! In fact, as I was writing the characters, the Tweedles and Matilda’s Moms just shown bright. I love them so much. All of them.
I used to think it was odd, how authors talked about their characters as though they were real. Well, surprise surprise. The Tweedles, Dar, and Petra seem real to me.
Take a Right at the Mistletoe comes out on November 9, and that is just so soon! Therefore, I want to introduce you to a few more of my favorite characters from the novella. (I already have requests for a sequel from early readers!)
So now that you’ve got the cover in front of your eyes, and you’ve already met Matilda and Dylan — it’s time for you to meet some of my other favorites!!
Take a Right at the Mistletoe: Meet the Secondary Characters!
I’m a very character-oriented storyteller. I love characters who come to me fully-formed with their host of problems, passions, and quirks. While Matilda is the heroine of the story and she made sense so easily to me, the characters that I had the most fun with were easily the Tweedles, Dar, and Petra. These three could be as intense or silly as I wanted them to be.
The Tweedles just showed up on the page. Okay, okay. So the truth is that I saw a magazine photo of three older women, laughing, and I just knew they were the type to get up to shenanigans. When I was brainstorming this novella, I knew I needed a few characters like these three. But, I wanted them to be men. And then, there I was in that first draft, writing out characters who were dubbed Tweedle Dee, Dum, and Tom. It made me laugh. And while that started out as a stand-in for their actual names, I had to keep it.
Matilda dubs them the Tweedles, and they’re just funniest. They love to know everything going on, but they have hearts of gold! I can hardly wait for you to meet them!!
Another set of characters who just flowed naturally into the story of Matilda and Dylan were Matilda’s mom, Dar and Petra. The back story on these two is something else, but basically, Dar is American and fell in love with Austrian Petra. And they live and work in Vienna, Austria, at Petra’s family bakery.
Dar is kind of a lot — and that’s a bit of an understatement. Petra is calm personified. But together, they balance each other out beautifully. Wow, I can hardly wait for you to interact with these two, especially Dar!
Good news! Take a Right at the Mistletoe releases in only two weeks! So grab your preorder now or wait to order the paperback anthology, The Spirit of Christmas, so you can read my novella and two others as well!
